Planning your own estate

Write down what you have, what you owe, who you would like to receive what, and how you would like to be remembered — in one place, kept on your own computer.

What you can record

The details that are hardest for someone else to piece together, kept where they can be found.

  • Assets

    Property, investments and belongings.

  • Debts

What is owed, and to whom.

  • Distributions

    Who receives what.

  • Accounts

Logins for email and paid services.

  • Beneficiaries

    The people who inherit.

  • Contacts

    Everyone the estate involves.

  • Files

    Documents, kept with the estate.

  • Funeral

    Funeral wishes, written down.

At your own pace

Nearly every field is optional. Fill in what you know today and come back to the rest whenever you like — a few accounts this week, the funeral wishes another time. The Overview shows what is filled in so far.

Your funeral wishes can be saved as a printable PDF. Anything left blank prints as an empty line, so a paper copy can be finished by hand and kept with your other papers.

Cairn's Funeral page: the service, music and readings, with a button to save it as a PDF.

Kept on your computer

Your estate information is stored on your computer and never sent to us. Stored account passwords can be encrypted with a passphrase only you know. How it works

A record, not a will

Cairn keeps a record of your wishes; it is not a will and does not replace one. It does not give legal, tax or financial advice. A lawyer or notary where you live can tell you what a valid will needs.
